Emily was house-sitting for her aunt, who had recently inherited an old Victorian mansion. The house had a creepy reputation, with rumors of strange noises and unexplained sightings. But Emily didn't believe in ghosts or anything supernatural, so she shrugged off the stories and settled into the house. One night, as Emily lay in bed reading a book, she heard a faint creaking sound coming from the hallway. She dismissed it as an old house settling and continued reading.
